The Prototype mk2 Has Landed

Start the countdown! We’ve received the proof copy of Far Away’s second edition and signed off on the production. In a few weeks, these advanced spacecraft will be loaded on a basic barge. A few waves later, they’ll reach the CPG offices and be distributed according to financial compensations.

Now that we have a real copy to point at, we can share the edition differences with pictorial precision. First, the box. It’s now bigger. It’ll fully close now, unless you make an active effort.

The two editions side-by-side, with the second edition being taller.

Not pictured: the stuff in the first edition box that makes it not fully close.

Next up, the thing everyone’s been asking for: the inlay. Put your tokens in things that aren’t bags. Fair warning: the HEXes still pile on top, but that was realistically unavoidable.

On the left, a chaotic scene of bags in a box. On the right, a plastic tray organizing cards and tokens.

You’ll still get 18 bags, which is fewer than the original 50.

The creatures have been resketched with a darker pencil. We also made the TOKEN images bigger. Both should help in low-light.

The Sagitta sacrificed its camouflage for you.

Speaking of low-light, we made three of the CUBE types opaque. Hopefully, this helps distinguish some of the resources.

The game's resource cubes from each edition lined up.

The Federation hopes this reduces the number of bioplastic-related choking deaths.

Finally, we fixed some typos and everything else in the errata.

The two manuals side by side.

No, we’re not taking pictures of all these changes.

Preemptively Answered Questions

We know some of you will have burning questions about all this. Hopefully, we can answer them now and avoid writing the same email a dozen times.

Should I buy the second edition of Far Away if I have the first?

Not unless you’re planning on giving a copy to someone. If the game was previously unplayable because of the colors or tokens (and the new version looks like it’ll fix that), please reach out and we’ll work with you to get you strapped into a more suitable spaceship.

Can I just get the inlay?

Yes. We will have 100 extras. We are holding off putting that in the store until we physically have them and are sure of a shipping solution.

Can I just get X component?

If it’s a replacement piece, yes. But if you’re looking to upgrade all the creature tokens, we don’t have that option. We couldn’t find a cost-effective way to make “upgrade kits” and didn’t hear enough demand for them.

Why didn’t you improve X?

We’d love to do things like make each resource a unique shape or have miniatures for explorers. At this time, that didn’t seem like the right decision. Part of it is that we’re trying to keep the costs down. We also didn’t want to delay the reprint by making sweeping changes. This edition fixes things we felt we could improve without retooling larger sections of the game or manufacturing process.

Why didn’t you include the AI module (ROLEPLAY replacement) for the creatures?

We are still planning to release that as part of an expansion pack. The ROLEPLAY system is something we feel is a fundamental part of Far Away, though we completely acknowledge it’s not a system for everyone.

When is the expansion coming out?

We made the decision to pursue Hair of the Dog before the Far Away expansion. It was something we were designing concurrently and felt like we could publish faster. The original plan was to have the reprint and the expansion be part of a future Kickstarter campaign. However, we sold out of Far Away faster than anticipated and wanted to get that back in stock without waiting for both Hair of the Dog and the expansion to be completed.

Your list wasn’t adequate. I still have questions.

That sounds like a great use for the comment section below!
